Our Story

Let me tell you why the elephant is on our logo… I bought Soap for Africa back in 2018, when as a customer I heard that the family were selling to retire in the UK. As a single mother – I needed something to do that would earn me an instant income, since my body was needing rest from my busy wellness practice. The colours of the logo are a combination of mine and my son’s favourites colours – his being orange, as well as we both love elephants. In many cultures, elephants are featured as symbols of power, wisdom and inspiration. I also remember watching a movie with my son Stuart, in which mother elephants migrate across the dessert holding trunk to tail with their calves in between.

I knew that I wanted this business to be an inspiration to others as well as provide a stable income. The global lockdown of 2020 was a life-changing time for many, and it was then that I decided to pivot my business to both online and Market sales, as well as grow distribution to several Health Shops. This created an opportunity for expansion, and I was able to hire Loveness to manufacture our much-loved soaps, as well as work the occasional Rosebank Sunday Market.

Benefits of Epsom Salts

Tis the season to be merry… But first we have to hurdle over the final stretch to Christmas and finally the New Year. If you are like me, some much needed down time is required at least once a week. So, why not try an Epsom Salt relaxing bath or foot spa – I do the latter after each Market Day.

Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulphate) are known for it’s muscle and nerve relaxing properties, as well are treating skin conditions like acne. Sulphur seems to have anti-bacterial effects, as well as loosening up of dead skin. But did you know that Epsom Slats are adaptogenic? If the body needs stimulating – the Sulphate acts on the body instead. AfriClarity have created a unique blend of Epsom Salts and Mustard to stimulate and open the pores allowing for better absorption of these adaptogenic ingredients. For your total relaxation – Rosemary, Lavender, Wormwood and Cape Geranium have been added. Wormwood is said to be a “love charm” in African Folk law. You can tell why I look forward to this ritual…

Epsom Salts are also good for our gardens – making seeds germinate and plants to grow bushier and with more flowers. Plants also need nutrients like Magnesium and Sulphur – think of them as building blocks. Although Magnesium and Sulfur occur naturally in soil, they can be depleted by various conditions. But unlike most commercial fertilizers, which build up in the soil over time, Epsom Salt is not persistent so you can’t overuse it. With take being said, after every foot spa, I throw the “grey water” onto the grass making it greener and saving on water usage. We are living in a water scarce country after all.

Everything we aim to do at AfriClarity is for the greater good of the individual and environment… Our 2020 vision is still set on sustainability!

Shampoo and Conditioning Bars benefit the environment

With focus moving towards sustaining our environment, there has been a move by consumers to using biodegradable ingredients and packaging. AfriClarity is aware of this trend and both our packaging and product development is moving in that direction…

Since AfriClarity pure glyceine soaps and shampoo bars are made with biodegradable ingredients, we have sourced biodegradable cellophane wrappers. On an industrial size landfill these wrappers will disappear into the earth. The ink is eco-friendly and our stickers will become biodegradable in good time. We use less water and electricity to manufacture our products than conventional shampoo’s. And since these are hard-wearing will last a lot longer.

Our She Butter Conditioning Bar is made from ingredients sourced both from Ghana and locally. Supporting our rich African diversity and pure indigenous oils – grows our economy with less carbon foot-print. Promoting the folk-law and healing benefits of wondrous oils like Wormwood (Artemisia Absinthium) – encourages locals to look to their immediate environment for solutions on health and well-being. Synthetic Bees Wax is used to solidify our Shea Butter Conditioning Bar, as we are conscious of the plight of our dying bee population.

Finally… The AfriClarity promise of sustainable, biodegradable, pure indigenous and glycerine products adds value to the earth and conscious consumer. Come and visit us the the Rosebank Sunday Market where we are trading smiles also!

Pure Glycerine Soap Relieves Psoriasis

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FEEDBACK ON OUR PURE GLYCERINE SOAPS: “Hi everyone. I have recently visited the Rosebank Sunday Market and met a wonderful lady Claire. She sells pure glycerine soap and was impressed with her product knowledge above all. In addition, Claire took time to educate me on the benefits of using pure glycerine soap – as I have Psoriasis. AfriClarity has a bargain basket that carry pure glycerine soap that people can try at the most reasonable prices. I bought a lot and even tried it for a week, as a hair shampoo bar. I’m amazed at the conditioning it gave my hair and the moisturizing effect it had on my skin – as I’m hyper sensitive to almost every product I buy.

I recommend a visit to her stall and see what amazing products she manufactures. AfriClarity carries other pure glycerine products, for instance Shampoo Bars and Herbal Bars with natural fragrances and colouring. As well as Conditioning Bars with Shea Butter and pure indigenous oils. Thank you Claire for a great experience and I will definitely support your venture. I addition, I will tell all my friends and family to visit you at the Rosebank Sunday Market. In conclusion, many thanks – you have a very happy customer.

Mrs Jonathan from Durban.”

Dope Soap

I bought this business from a wonderful couple whom had been making pure glycerine soaps for the past 25 years – and amongst the natural fragrances I came across Hemp Oil, not in the bottle you might find at retailers, but in amber – none the less, clearly marked. Hemp soaps were one of their existing lines but decided to “sit on it” till I had done further research – this Hemp Oil is CBD/Cannabinoid Infused… Hence the name Dope Soap.

There has been a lot of hype around Cannabis and it’s legality for personal use – this sparking the open growth of these beautiful plants in gardens to Cannabis Fairs and Markets. I even see street signs advertising the latest in Cannabis Massage Oils and the like. Through my research I learn’t that Cannabis Oil has been used by all the traditions from China to India to finally the West – it’s medical uses are well documented.

All that being said, I was “sitting on” cold pressed Hemp Oil and the benefits for hair, skin and body are amazing. Enriched with Omega 6 and 3 Oils, it is said to treat Eczema and Psroiasis due to it’s anti-inflammatory properties – reducing itching. Hemp Oils is a natural moisturizer, nourishing the skin and scalp alike – so watch this space as we develop on our very popular pure glycerine Shampoo Bars. The Omega 3 in Hemp Oil will also help to add shine, tame unruly hair and give it strength.

To our pure glycerine soaps, I then decided to add Moringa leaves – rich in natural Vitamin C, boosting collagen and helping reduce fine lines and wrinkles. As well as Rooibos Tea for it’s anti-oxidant quality (Superoxide Dismutase) – reducing wrinkles and boosts the production of healthy skin cells. Rooibos also has anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic properties, which helps treat Acne and other shin conditions beautifully. Alas, I’m soo grateful that I can continue to use my knowledge and talents AND be creative in this business. See you at the Rosebank Sunday Market, where we are trading smiles also ?

Building my first EcoBricks…

I was previously a customer of Soap for Africa – pure glycerine soaps and that’s how I came to hear about the opportunity to continue it’s legacy. As an environmentally conscious consumer, I thought that the packaging had to change. “The product inside is great – but do something about the wrapping” – I was told by a friend. Until I learn’t about the soaps high glycerine content, making it humectant and drawing moisture to itself. That must be why it leaves the skin so soft – I thought. So, I tried wrapping it in sandwich wrap and when that did’nt work, baking paper and each time we had rain and humidity on the highveld – the paper got all gummy.

But I still wanted to do my part for the environment – our glycerine soaps are biodegradable – so why not the wrapping. I’m currently looking at using cellophane and if you have a suggestion – please contact me via this website. So, for now I had to find another alternative – especially as so much of our household plastic and waste may not be recyclable even though you go to the effort, as I do to sort it for collection…

Another friend told me about EcoBricks and since I don’t drink 2ltr bottles of fizzy drinks (the SA standard for making such bricks) I have decided to upcycle the Mayo bottles I do use – putting all my clean, dry used plastic into them instead. I have reached out to friends and customers alike and received two bottles thus far to assist me with my current project – making a bookshelf with the plastic waste filled Mayo bottles. My plastic consumption for my first month was a surprising 430 grams – I probably produced the same amount as that, in sales of the wrapping that protects our AfriClarity pure glycerine soaps. So, I feel balanced in this equation for now – I also feel I need to educate others to do the same – look up https://www.ecobricks.org for your own inspiration and setting up.
